(KNSI) – Seasonal road restrictions are already here following a mild winter.

They started in Wright and Sherburne Counties, which are in the southern zone, this past Monday. The limits take effect in Stearns and Benton Counties, both located in the central zone, beginning on Friday. Truck weights are curbed to at most five tons per axle on dirt or gravel roads and ten tons on paved streets, including highways.

The restrictions were first put in place on a seasonal basis in the 1930s. It is estimated that 60% of damage to roads in northern states happens during the spring. As frost gradually disappears, the ground near the surface has a high water content. That can make it unstable, which leads roads to buckle.

There is no set date for when the limits will be lifted. It is determined by weather conditions.
