(KNSI) – St. Cloud Area School District 742 will celebrate those who get our children to and from school safely each day.

Wednesday is the eighth annual School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Districts, bus organizations and communities will host a wide range of events to say thank you. In St. Cloud, all 20 drivers will be treated to bagels and free merchandise from Kwik Trip. They will also be visited by Superintendent Laurie Putnam.

St. Cloud schools contract with Cedar, Palmer, Spanier and Trobecs bus companies for another 80 drivers. The district transports 9,000 students a day.

District 742 Supervisor of Transportation Natalie Ratha told KNSI News their drivers get to build great relationships with the kids in the community and it’s a rewarding profession. She says they’re always looking for more drivers.

To bring attention to this important role, Governor Tim Walz has proclaimed February 21st as School Bus Driver Appreciation Day.

The I-35W Bridge, Lowry Avenue Bridge and Capella Tower in Minneapolis will be lit yellow in recognition.
