(KNSI) — The Minnesota State Emblems Redesign Commission announced Tuesday morning they have selected a new flag.
Submission F1953 was slightly modified to remove the white and green stripe, and the North Star was also altered. The white represents the snow. Green represents our history of agriculture and the natural beauty of the state. The blue, which was kept, represents the significance of water to our state with the 10,000 plus lakes and being the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The star represents our state motto of “L’etiolle du Nord,” meaning “star of the north.” It is placed over an abstract of the state’s shape.
The commission removed L’etiolle du Nord from the state seal and replaced it with the Dakota language phrase of Mni Sóta Makoce, which means Land Where the Waters Reflect the Clouds.
