(KNSI) – The State Emblems Redesign Commission announced Friday evening that it has selected a new Minnesota flag.
Submission F1953 will likely see significant modifications before the deadline of December 31st, when the group needs to make its final recommendations to the state legislature.
Also released was the updated version of the state seal, which looks dramatically different than the logo that was first entered. Gone is the gold and navy blue color scheme. The commission removed the state motto, L’Etoile du Nord, French for The Star of the North, and replaced it with a Dakota saying.
Compare the two below. The original is presented first.

The changes to the seal suggest that the new flag will be altered greatly before the process has played out. A release from the redesign commission says it “may include the shape of Minnesota, the number and color of stripes, and the star.”
The group was created by the legislature last session to revamp what some believed was a racist or outdated emblem.
