(KNSI) — From large, loud bashes to quiet dinner parties, pets may be stressed by having extra commotion in the house.

Veterinarian Dr. Susan Nelson has a tip if animals show signs of anxiety. “If your dog or your cat is not comfortable with strangers or other people in the house, then they should probably be shut up in a back room or maybe in a crate during party time. That way they may be less stressed and not in the midst of everything.”

Watch for signs of anxiety such as chewing on items, trembling, having accidents, or not eating.

If keeping them away from the party area doesn’t work, talk to your vet about some alternatives. Dr. Nelson recommends, “There’s herbal supplements that can be safe and effective for mild stress to help with that, and then, for when they really get stressed and bothered, you can look at prescription medications, if needed, over the holidays.

Calming aids don’t make pets tired but allow them to function while lowering stress levels. If you’re not comfortable giving your cat or dog supplements, compression shirts or a new toy to distract them can be helpful.
