(KNSI) – A sitting head of state will visit St. John’s University on Monday.
The Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Philip Davis, has been tapped to deliver the annual Eugene J. McCarthy Lecture. Since May 2017, Davis has led the Progressive Liberal Party in The Bahamas. In September 2021, he was elected the country’s fifth Prime Minister. He also serves as Minister of Finance. It’s the first time a sitting head of state has visited the campus in the school’s 276-year history.
The speech will be followed by a discussion with the prime minister led by history professor Dr. Brittany Merritt Nash. Davis is expected to talk about the unique relationship between the College of Saint Benedict and SJU. He will also share his point of view on climate change, economics and other challenges and opportunities related to The Bahamas.
The event is December 11th at 7:30 p.m. in the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater at Saint John’s University. A limited number of free tickets remain. The event is open to the public, and the lecture will be live-streamed.
The annual McCarthy Lecture seeks to inspire a new generation of young people to pursue fresh ideas, challenge the status quo, effect positive change in their communities, and lead with honesty, integrity, and courage.
Notable past speakers include journalist Tom Brokaw, Senator Tina Smith, Senator Amy Klobuchar and Former Governor Jeb Bush.
