(KNSI) — A 13-year-old girl is being hailed as a hero after keeping calm after her mother suffered an undisclosed medical emergency while she was driving.
According to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Department, a 911 call came in on September 28th at 8:51 p.m. Abby Foss told the dispatcher, who answered she was in a car on Highway 200 in a rural area south of Bemidji. Her mom, Barbara, was in the driver’s seat but wasn’t responding after she asked her to slow down. The dispatcher sent deputies and an ambulance in their direction while coaching Abby through what to do. She told her how to get the car to slow down and how to steer it to safety.
Eventually, Abby stopped the car, and first responders provided 54-year-old Barbara with medical attention. She was taken to Sanford Hospital for treatment and has since recovered.
Abby was honored with an award for bravery by Hubbard County emergency personnel and met the dispatcher who helped her.
