(KNSI) – Sartell City Council approved an updated solar ordinance, 4-1, at Monday’s meeting.

It will continue to allow for solar gardens or systems in any zoning district, but new requirements were put in place that would limit potential locations for development. There is currently 3 megawatts of solar capacity in the city. The figure would be capped at 10 megawatts in the future.

Setbacks were also established. New structures would need to be 200 feet from any park or existing building or structure. Another setback involves being at least a quarter mile from streets, including major arteries like Pine Cone Road.

There are requirements for decommissioning equipment at the end of its useful life. Property owners need proper landscaping or fencing to shield the structures from view. Along the same vein, ground-mounted systems must be installed in the backyard.

The one no vote was a request to send it back to the planning commission so they could make recommendations on the new staff proposals first.
