(KNSI) – Xcel Energy says it wants to add enough wind farms to boost renewable capacity by 1,200 megawatts in the state.
The projects would be online by 2027, well before coal-fired generators like the Sherco plant in Becker are retired. It would be enough to power 485,000 homes over the course of a year. The utility says tax credits would be used to keep the cost of construction reasonable and rates low for customers.
President Chris Clark says, “Wind energy is abundant across the states we serve, and we’re excited to see developers’ proposals that will benefit our customers.” The new capacity would be brought to central Minnesota through the previously announced Minnesota Energy Connection transmission line.
Xcel says it is flexible regarding the specifics of each wind farm. Developers will have the opportunity to pitch different project sizes and types. The utility also would like to hear ideas for energy storage and the possibility of some solar.
The company is hoping to be carbon neutral by 2040.
