(KNSI) – Minnesotans should see plenty of pheasants when they start walking corn rows for roosters on Saturday morning.
The 11th Annual Governor’s Pheasant Opener in Owatonna begins at sunrise.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Sarah Strommen told KNSI’s Bob Hughes the early ones could get the bird. “We are expecting a great opener this year. Pheasant numbers are up 10% statewide and if you’re in southwest Minnesota, they’re up about 100%.”
Strommen says there are great opportunities to bag birds across a large swath of the state. “People tend to think of southwest Minnesota for pheasant hunting, but part of our opportunity of being here in Owatonna is to highlight the opportunity all across southern Minnesota and our pheasant range. And so, I think we’ll have good hunting here too.”
Outdoor recreation is a $10 billion industry in Minnesota and greatly boosts local economies.
