(KNSI) — Members of Minnesota’s Congressional delegation are condemning the surprise attack by Hamas militants on Israel over the weekend that left hundreds of people dead.
More than 700 people are reportedly dead. Dozens have been taken hostage.
Senator Amy Klobuchar denounced the attack, calling it “horrific and gut wrenching.” Senator Tina Smith echoed Klobuchar’s sentiments, saying it is “horrible” and “an outrage.”
Seventh District Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach says the attack was “shocking and horrifying,” and she is praying for and grieving with the families who have lost loved ones.
Sixth District Congressman Tom Emmer said Saturday, “America stands firmly with Israel and condemns the heinous attacks being perpetrated by Hamas terrorists. We will support our strongest ally in the Middle East and their right to defend themselves.”
Fifth District Congresswoman Ilhan Omar took to her social media account over the weekend, first condemning the attacks, but later demanding compassion toward and international protection for the Palestinians. She has been critical of Israel in the past accusing the country of hypnotizing the world, adding, “May Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.” Another heavily criticized post was her seeming to support those who were involved in the 9/11 terror attacks saying, “Some people did something.”
Fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border near the Gaza Strip at the completion of the Jewish fall holiday season, where Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are combined into one major celebration.
