Department of Revenue Completes Tax Rebate Check Distribution

(KNSI) — The Minnesota Department of Revenue says it has completed processing the one time tax rebate checks.

The distribution started August 16th, with direct deposits being sent out first, and where that was not possible, paper checks were issued. Over the last 45 days, the department has sent out 2.1 million rebates worth an estimated $1 billion.

The checks were part of a larger $3 billion tax bill.

Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan said the money came when families needed it before the back to school season. Depending on income guidelines and number of children, taxpayers could get up to $1,300.

House Minority Leader Lisa Demuth (R – Cold Spring) took aim at the governor for not delivering on his campaign promise of bigger checks. “During the election, Governor Walz repeatedly promised Minnesotans $2,000 rebate checks. Now, only a select few Minnesotans will be getting a paltry $260-hardly what they were promised by the Governor.”

She adds, “a couple hundred dollar rebate check doesn’t make up for the massive tax hikes Minnesotans would be dealing with thanks to Democrats and their self-described insatiable appetite for raising taxes. Families aren’t getting relief-they’re getting even higher taxes.”

The department says for taxpayers who have not gotten a rebate yet, check eligibility guidelines on the website.
