(KNSI) – Sunday is Minnesota Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day, and flags will be at half-staff in remembrance.
Governor Tim Walz has ordered all public buildings to mark the occasion. He encourages companies and individuals also to participate. The state legislature unanimously passed a bill in 2009 creating the observance.
It was modeled after a federal proclamation signed by President George W. Bush in October 2001, barely a month after 343 New York Fire Department members died while trying to evacuate people from the World Trade Center on 9/11. The two 110-story towers collapsed less than two hours after they were struck by commercial airliners in a terror attack.
About 100 firefighters die each year across the United States.
