Minnesota Historical Society to Celebrate 50 Years of Charles Lindbergh House and Museum

(KNSI) — The Minnesota Historical Society is celebrating 50 years as the custodian of Charles Lindbergh’s childhood home in Little Falls.

Site Manager Kayla Stielow says on Saturday, September 30th, there are activities planned at the museum and the nearby airfield.

“We’re offering house tours, special presentations, photo ops, and fun games and prizes, as well as birthday treats available to the public. They’re also hosting a fly-in at the Little Falls airport.”

The extras are all included with the normal admission price at the museum. Stielow says there will be a shuttle that runs between the two sites.

The Lindberghs built the home in 1906, and Charles spent his childhood between central Minnesota and Washington, D.C., where his father was a congressman. Stielow says it is the only facility anywhere that focuses on Lindbergh throughout all stages of his life.

During his childhood, Lindbergh became fascinated with airplanes after he spotted his first flyer from his bedroom window. “He saw that it was flying upriver to do an air show in Little Falls. They called a barnstorming at the time, and Charles remembers crawling out of his second story window and standing on the roof and watching it go by. And, given the life he led afterward, we know that that must have been a really impactful moment for him.”

Lindbergh would become the first person to complete a trans-Atlantic flight in 1927. He was only 25 years old when he entered the cockpit of the Spirit of St. Louis May 17th, 1927. He completed the journey from Long Island to Paris in about 33.5 hours.

Lindbergh was also a military officer and inventor.

The Lindbergh House and Museum is at 1620 Lindbergh Drive South in Little Falls.
