(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is opening up state parks for free this weekend.

The DNR says Free Park Day means all 75 recreation areas and state parks will be open. No sticker or day pass is needed. Most Minnesotans live within 30 miles of a state park.

“September is such a great time to be outdoors as we look forward to the changing seasons,” said Ann Pierce, director of the Minnesota DNR Parks and Trails Division. “We hope Minnesotans who haven’t been to a state park before or haven’t visited in a while will come out to enjoy time in nature and make memories with friends and family.”

The DNR says the goal is to encourage families to spend time together getting exercise and enjoying the great outdoors. The agency says something as simple as a quick hike improves quality of life by boosting creativity and helping to gain flexibility and build stamina. The DNR says hiking is the most popular state park activity.

While admission fees are waived on free park days, charges associated with camping or other activities still apply.

An annual vehicle permit costs $35. A $ 7-day pass can also be bought. Veterans and active duty military can get a discount. Learn more by clicking here.
