(KNSI) – Youngsters can be introduced to waterfowl hunting during a special hunt weeks before the regular season.

On Saturday and Sunday, kids between 13 and 17 can learn how to hunt with an adult who is not hunting. Over the weekend, kids can take ducks, geese, mergansers, coots and moorhens from a half hour before sunrise to sunset. Regular daily bag limits apply. Motorized decoys are legal during the youth hunt.

The youth waterfowl weekend happens when many people participate in a wide range of water-based activities, including harvesting wild rice. The Minnesota DNR urges all waterfowl hunters to be aware of and cautious about people taking part in other activities on the water, no matter where they hunt.

The regular duck hunting season starts September 23rd.
