(KNSI) – The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota says kids in its summer reading incentive program logged a whopping 3,419 hours with a book while school was out of session.

The nonprofit says the program is part of its Summer Brain Gain concept. Vice President of Operations Geri Bechtold says, “Recent studies show that youth lose upwards of 17 percent of what they learned in the past school year during the summer.”

The initiative is meant to help reduce that. It features 37 week-long modules focusing on literacy, science, math, engineering, and hands-on activities to keep learning going outside of the classroom in a fun way.

The site with the most readers won an ice cream social. They busted out the banana splits at the Clearview KIDSTOP. Westwood and Talahi KIDSTOPs came in second and third.

Individuals were ranked by age group. The top three were rewarded with a $100 Target gift card, a $50 gift card, or a $25 gift card.
