(KNSI) — The excessive heat warning and heat advisories issued for the southern third of the state have moved north and now include Benton, Sherburne and Stearns Counties.
The National Weather Service says the heat wave will start Tuesday and peak Tuesday and Wednesday with maximum heat index values “well in excess of 100” and possible record breaking temperatures. There will be little relief overnight as low temps will only be about 70.
An excessive heat warning is in effect from 11:00 Tuesday morning through 10:00 Wednesday night. Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Drivers should also watch out for buckling roads.
Forecasters say to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, stay in air conditioning as much as possible, and check up on relatives and neighbors – especially those who are older, frail, lack air conditioning or are in poor health.
They also say to take extra precautions when working or spending time outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioned environments, and know the signs of heat related illnesses.
