(KNSI) – The U.S. Drought Monitor report shows severe or extreme drought creeping across a greater portion of central Minnesota.
It is beginning to cross over into the western half of Stearns County, in addition to all of Benton and Sherburne Counties. There is a caveat, though. The readings were taken early Tuesday and do not capture the deluge that fell late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Belgrade, Brooten, and Paynesville all got at least 1.5″ of rain, according to estimates from the National Weather Service.
Extreme drought continues to make up over half of Benton County, a quarter of Sherburne County, and five percent of Stearns County around the St. Cloud area. This region is one of only three spots in the state dealing with extreme drought. Anoka County and a patch centered in Olmsted County are also being affected.
