(KNSI) – A Michigan man is headed to jail after shooting at another driver during a road rage incident near Avon last year.
In April, Shannon Woods pleaded guilty in Stearns County District Court to one count of 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. This week, Judge Sarah Hennesy sentenced him to nine months in jail to be served in three different segments.
The sentence was a downward departure, meaning it was less than recommended by guidelines. Court records state part of the reason is that the victim was also an aggressor in the incident and that Woods, who has no criminal history, has shown remorse.
Woods was also sentenced to three months in prison stayed, meaning he won’t need to serve the time unless he violates the terms of his five-year probation.
The 24-year-old from Inkster, a suburb of Detroit, fired two or three shots from his vehicle as the other man exited the freeway. One bullet hit the driver’s side window and skimmed the tip of the man’s nose.
The victim told police he became frustrated with Woods while driving because Woods would not let him pass. The man said the two drivers went back and forth and started racing.
Woods told police the Avon man had been tailgating him and cut him off. Woods said the other driver flashed an unknown object at him. Court records show police found a machete-type tool and multiple knives in the Avon man’s car.
