(KNSI) — Young hunters have one month to apply for a tag to take part in some special hunts coming up.

The firearms hunts are for kids between the ages of 12 and 15 during hunting season. The hunts will be held in 13 state parks and the Rydell National Wildlife Refuge on various dates in the fall. Registration is open until August 18th. An adult must be with a child while in the field.

Special youth deer hunts differ from the statewide youth deer season as the regular youth hunting season is October 19th through the 22nd and does not require an application.

Hunters can only use nontoxic ammunition when participating in a special hunt in a Minnesota state park, but lead-free ammunition requirements don’t apply to special youth hunts in a shotgun-only zone if hunters take all of the deer from the field, including the innards. Nontoxic ammunition includes steel, copper-plated, nickel-plated, zinc-plated and other projectiles made from a nontoxic material approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Officials are also opening a youth archery hunt for kids ages ten and 17 in the Sand Prairie Wildlife Management Area in Sherburne County all season long. Applications are also being accepted for the youth archery hunt at Camp Ripley on October 7th and 8th.
