(KNSI) – A plan that turns storm drains into works of art with a purpose is expanding.
The Storm Drain Art Program is adding four new murals this month. The newest designs were completed last Friday at the Jaycees Dog Park and the downtown Lady Slipper Parking Lot. The dog park’s mural features a sea turtle and storm sewer pipes with the phrase ‘It takes a lot of blue to stay green.’ The Lady Slipper Lot’s picture features a pond with cattails, butterflies and a loon with the words’ clean water=happy wildlife.’
Two more will be painted soon at St. Cloud City Hall and Pantown Park. There will be 14 murals throughout the city once the last two are completed.
St. Cloud’s Storm Drain Art Program helps remind people what happens to water when it enters a storm drain while educating them about the importance of being good water stewards. There are over 8,000 storm drains in St. Cloud.
The program started in 2021 in partnership with a local artist, the Sauk River Watershed District, and the community.
A Minnesota Department of Health Source Water Protection Grant provides the funding.
The art is meant to complement the city’s Adopt-A-Drain Program, where residents volunteer to clean storm drains to keep them clear of sediment, trash, yard waste and debris to reduce water pollution.
