(KNSI) — Registration is now open for this year’s Amazing-est Race with the United Way of Central Minnesota.

Coming up on Saturday, August 19th, teams of two to four members will start at Lake George at 10:00 a.m. and then crisscross downtown St. Cloud as they solve various challenges and activities. United Way of Central Minnesota Director of Marketing and Communications Sam Switzer tells KNSI News it will be a memorable outing.

“My goal when I’m picking challenges is to provide experiences that the average person may not get to do on a normal day. So, for example last year racers got to jump in a pedal boat out on Lake George and try and collect rubber duckies with butterfly nets,” says Switzer.

The cost is $30 for adults or $15 for children 12 and under. Each year is unique, and the challenges only get harder. The event is planned to last three hours. There are prizes for first ($500), second ($250), and third places ($100).

Signing up early for this year’s race could yield a significant competitive advantage, so Switzer says don’t wait. “So, teams have the opportunity to reach out to family and friends, and teams who raise money will get a head start. Teams that raise $500 will actually get a six-minute head start, $350 would get them a four-minute head start and $200 raised would get them a two-minute head start.”

Switzer says that certain activities during the Amazing-est Race, like the pedal boats last year, only have so many slots available at one time. The head start could be the difference between jumping right into the next challenge or waiting in line. That might determine the winner.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the United Way’s newest push to support area mental health organizations.
