(KNSI) – The College of Saint Benedict Varsity Softball Team led the entire country in a key statistic this spring.

In NCAA Division III, no one was better defensively. The Bennies flashed the leather from the opening pitch of the 2023 campaign. They made only 12 errors during the season, giving the squad a .987 fielding percentage. That was best among the 401 teams that were measured. Fifteen players on the team were perfect with the glove.

The team was ahead of second-place East Texas Baptist (.985, 19 errors) and Southern Maine (.980, 25 errors), which finished in third.

St. Benedict saw success in the standings as well. It took second place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 26-7 overall record. Spurred on by their defense, the Bennies got as high as number 13 in the national polls during the season.
