(KNSI) – The Sartell City Council will discuss using funds from its Community Grant Program to help with the building of a new child care center at Monday’s meeting.
Staff say that Sartell needs 443 child care spots and the overall St. Cloud area is short by over 1,000. The grant amount would be determined by the size of the facility. If 50 or fewer spots are created, the award would be $5,000. That jumps to $20,000 if the number of spots created is between 150-200. The Community Grant Program was first created in 2022 but has not been used in this way before.
Staff says if new child care facilities do not open up, it will hamper future commercial development. They point to the possibility of a new University of Minnesota Medical School as being a catalyst to drive further demand for child care.
