(KNSI) – Over 1,000 people are expected for this weekend’s Tour of Saints bike event.
Some people describe it as a heavenly little ride. Others call it an angelic cruise. Everyone agrees it is not a competition. Event Director Michael Doyle says it turns into quite the scene.
“We start riders registering at 6:30 [a.m.] all the way through 8:30 [a.m.] and we let them go as they’re ready rather than sending them out in some kind of a mass start. So, by the time you get out on the rides, it’s spread out over the course of, maybe, 10 miles or so,” he says.
There are three different distances for the event that utilize area roads or the Lake Wobegon Trail, from 18 to 50 miles. Every ride starts and ends on the College of St. Benedict campus. Doyle says it’s similar to a family get-together.
“One thing that I always comment on is the camaraderie of both the riders and the volunteers. I have people that call me up to volunteer every year because they look forward to doing this because they enjoy the participants, the riders, so much, and vice versa. We have people always say what great volunteers we have up there and they always look forward to the rest stops,” he says.
Snacks from Cold Spring Bakery, plus water and other refreshments are offered along the way. Same-day registration is available. All proceeds from the Tour of Saints benefit the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota.
