(KNSI) – Summer is a time when many kids will be home alone, and the Waite Park Police Department wants to make sure they have the tools to be safe.
Community Outreach Specialist Alicia Mages will teach the class and told KNSI News parents find the course valuable. “I’ve had great reviews from it. The information parents have thought is very helpful for their kids. And I think some of the kids dread it going into it, but then they usually end up smiling when they leave and having a good time. I try and make it fun and educational.”
She says it’s helpful for kids to be taught at-home safety by someone other than mom and dad. “I always think it’s better when kids hear it from someone other than their parents. Because I am a parent and I am well aware that I know nothing. So, when told by someone other than your parents, sometimes kids tend to listen a little better.”
The class will go over when to call 911, what information to give dispatchers, being safe online, in the kitchen, and during severe weather, taking care of siblings, and basic first aid. Parents will also be given a checklist of things to go over before leaving their children alone. The sessions are designed for kids between the age of nine and 12.
Two one-day classes are being offered, and kids only attend one. The first is Thursday, July 20th, and the second is Friday, July 21st. The cost is $20 and covers lunch and supplies for kids to build a first aid kit.
