(KNSI) — Criminal charges may be filed against a person in Florida accused of making threats to a central Minnesota church.

According to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, they received a report from police in Lee County, Florida, on June 24th that someone in Lee County “may pose a threat” to the First Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg. A multi-jurisdictional investigation was launched between the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and police in Florida.

Authorities notified leadership at the church, and they worked together to implement a safety plan while the investigation continued.

Ultimately information obtained by police in Minnesota showed the person who was believed to be making the threats may have suffered from a mental health crisis, and no threat was made toward that church. The person was taken to a hospital in Lee County for treatment and observation. Criminal charges may still be filed.

Sheriff Eric Tollefson says law enforcement around the country recognizes there are threats made to houses of worship all over the country every day, and they are increasing each year. “This case is a good reminder to us to always be aware of our surroundings. You know your community, you know when something isn’t normal. If you see something, say something.”

If you or someone you know has a mental health crisis, please contact the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 988. Veterans can call that number and press 1. It’s a free call from any phone.
