(KNSI) – Benton County honored a registered nurse whose heroic actions after a horrific crash saved a man.

On Tuesday, commissioners presented its Citizens Lifesaving Award to Donald Hall. According to the sheriff’s office, on July 13th, 2022, at around 1:30 p.m., the victim was stopped at the intersection of 15th Avenue Northeast and Little Rock Road Northeast. Investigators say his car was hit from behind by an inattentive driver at highway speeds.

The crash ruptured the car’s fuel tank and pushed the vehicle into the ditch, leaving the man with significant neck pain, difficulty breathing, and loss of feeling in his arms and legs.

The sheriff’s office says Hall came across the crash and put his professional training into practice. He began to stabilize the victim by opening his airway and immobilizing his spine. Doctors say both decisions were crucial to saving his life.

The man is still recovering almost a year later but is alive thanks to Hall’s actions.
