(KNSI) — The fifth annual Central Minnesota First Responder Appreciation event is coming up on June 1st at the Benton County fairgrounds in Sauk Rapids.

Executive Director of the Greater St. Cloud Public Safety Foundation Sonja Gidlow talked with KNSI News and said the event is a chance to meet everyday heroes. “These folks are out there ready to serve the community and serving the community every day, but most of us don’t have a chance to actually interact with them. And so, it’s just a great opportunity to meet these folks. They are such great people. Their dedication is incredible.”

It’s also a chance to get an up close and personal look at their tools of the trade. “We would really love for people to come out and say thank you and heck, [how often do] you get to sit in the SWAT vehicle or you get to pet the canine? It’s kind of a two way street; both appreciation and lots of fun.”

Vehicles from police, fire, paramedics, SWAT, and helicopters will be on display.

People can learn about public safety careers with Alexandria Technical and Community College and St. Cloud Technical and Community College.

Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served. It’s free, but donations are accepted, with proceeds benefitting the St. Cloud Public Safety Foundation.

The celebration started in 2016. Click here to learn more.
