(KNSI) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Sartell Police Department are asking residents to be bear-aware after a bear was seen wandering around town.
According to police, the bear was spotted near Leander Avenue and Brianna Drive at about 8:30 Friday night.
Bears are attracted to things that smell, taste or look like food. These include birdseed, dog food, grease on grills, garbage, fish entrails and fruit. Once a bear finds a food source, it will return repeatedly. The DNR says to remove potential food sources like birdfeeders and garbage cans; bears will likely move on.
A woman sustained serious, but not life-threatening, injuries after stepping outside a cabin in Nisswa and the bear swiped at her several times. DNR officials say the bear was likely scared.
If anyone has any questions, call the Sartell Police non-emergency line at 320-251-8186 or the Minnesota DNR at 651-296-6157.
