(KNSI) – The U.S. House of Representatives observed a moment of silence on Thursday in honor of a Pope County deputy killed in the line of duty.
Josh Owen was shot on Saturday night while responding to a domestic assault. It was his 44th birthday. Seventh District Congress Woman Michelle Fischbach spoke with a delegation of Minnesota lawmakers on the House floor. “This is a devastating heartbreaking reminder that our men and women in law enforcement put their communities above all else every single day.”
He leaves behind his wife of 18 years, Shannon, and a 10-year-old son. “We are praying for Josh’s family and for the Pope County community as they mourn the loss of a local hero.”
Deputy Owen spent nearly twelve years with the sheriff’s office and recently received the Distinguished Service Award. He was also a military veteran, serving with the Minnesota National Guard in Iraq.
Owen’s funeral is Saturday at Minnewaska High School. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend.
