(KNSI) – It would be an understatement to say the Stearns County Parks Division was busy this winter.

The department spent 678 hours grooming skiing and snowmobile trails and plowing or sanding nearby roads. The total is over 100 hours more than last year and about 250 hours more than the 2020-21 season. Parks employees are responsible for completing all of the work each season.

Making up the network of paths is the Dairyland Trail and Lake Wobegon Trail, consisting of over 75 miles of combined routes. Trails are used for Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and other winter activities.

It may get even busier in the future. A major expansion to the recreation network has yet to be completed. Stearns County will be extending the Beaver Island Trail, so that it runs from St. Cloud out to Clearwater and Warner Lake County Park, about 10 miles to the southeast. A recreational path will be laid this summer for biking, which should increase snowmobile usage on the trail going forward.
