(KNSI) – A central Minnesota woman is spreading the word about the need for organ donations during National Donate Life Month.
Life Source Ambassador Renee Willhite spoke to KNSI News shortly after a flag-raising ceremony in honor of her husband Mike and other organ donors on Monday. He died in an accident at 49 in 2010. Willhite says her husband knew this would be his last gift. “Other than his legacy of helping others, this would be the last tangible thing he could give in life to someone else.”
Willhite told KNSI News giving the gift of life is one of the most selfless legacies a person can leave behind. “We can’t change this outcome, but we have the potential to change the outcome for another family. Maybe we can spare a family some grief.”
She encourages everyone to decide to donate their organs and save a life. At the time of Mike’s death, Willhite worked for CentraCare’s facility in Sauk Centre, and her daughter now works in the operating room at St. Cloud Hospital. CentraCare says the hospital set a new record for organ donations in 2022, with 19 donor families helping to save 59 lives.
The Donate Life flag was raised in front of St. Cloud Hospital and will be up for April. The idea behind the flag-raising is to make a unified statement about the importance of donation while representing the need for donors and encouraging people to register as a donor.
