(KNSI) – Becker High School joins District 742 and Sartell in sending a robotics team to a spring world championship.

The team competes in the For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, or FIRST, Network. Becker had to make it through the Great Northern Regional in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to advance to the FRC World Championships held from April 20th through the 23rd. The team, named C.I.S., was a regional finalist, winner of the Impact Award, had a member named Dean’s List Finalist, and one of the team’s mentors received the Woodie Flowers Award.

Six hundred other squads will join them in Houston, Texas. The group has 33 students and is known for being active in the community. They have put on demonstrations at the Becker County Fair and the Minnesota State Fair. Team C.I.S. also has a program with the local Girl Scouts troop called Coding for Cookies, which helps the scouts learn about science, technology, engineering, and math principles, among other community outreach.

The team is doing a spaghetti dinner and bake sale at Becker High School on April 14th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. to cover travel costs. In addition to a great meal, guests will have a chance to give the squad’s 2023 “Lockjaw” robot a once-over. Other fundraisers are expected in the coming weeks as well. The total tab for sending the students to Houston is expected to be about $30,000.
