(KNSI) – Hypnotist Doug Sands will be at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School on March 31st for a 7:00 p.m. comedy show to benefit the drama club.
Students and community members of all ages are welcome to both attend and participate. Sands says eventually 20 to 25 volunteers will join him on stage. He says the magic comes from seeing people get to display a side of themselves that their everyday personalities don’t let shine through.
“I turn one of the students, or the volunteers on stage into an opera singer or a rap star. Usually it’s one of the quieter students or someone who probably would not be that confident otherwise and then they get up on stage and they’re just belting it out with everything they got.”
Sands says hypnotism is a trance brought on by relaxation and mimics a stage just above sleep. In that moment, like a vivid dream, you accept what Sands tells you as your new reality. Tickets for the Friday night show begin at five dollars.
Sands talks about what got him into hypnotism.
“I was studying to be a psychologist and I stumbled into a hypnotist’s office trying to figure out some anxiety that I was working through and it worked, really, to put it in a nutshell.”
He says he now splits his time. Half goes to shows like the upcoming Sauk Rapids one which carry him across the country. The other half is devoted to a Salt Lake City, Utah therapy practice where Sands uses hypnotism to help people overcome various fears and phobias.
