(KNSI) — There’s an open house for people to get a look at a project that will cause a major detour on Highway 23 between Paynesville and New London.
The purpose is to expand seven miles of the road to four lanes between the two towns. It will direct traffic off Highway 23 near Paynesville and west onto Highway 55, then south on County Road 2 and then back onto Highway 23 just west of Hawick. The detour will be put in place this spring. Tree clearing will take place in March, with construction beginning April 23rd.
In addition to the South Gap, the North Gap expansion of Highway 23 to four lanes from Paynesville to Richmond will be completed this year. Highway 23 will be a continuous four-lane road from Willmar to Foley when both sections are done.
The open house is on March 2nd at Peace Lutheran Church in New London between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. There are no formal presentations, and people are invited to stop by at their convenience during the open house.
The project started in 2021 and should finish in 2024.
