(KNSI) — A Sauk Centre police officer performed a daring rescue Sunday morning to save a woman from a burning home.
According to police, they were called to the fire on the 700 block of 5th Street South just after 1:00. In just under two minutes, crews arrived and saw heavy smoke coming from the doors and windows of the home. They were met in the yard by a man and a child who lived at the house and said a woman was still inside. An officer ran into the house, which was already filled with smoke. After an unsuccessful search of the first floor, he made his way to a staircase, where he was met with open flames. He bypassed the flames and headed upstairs, where he could hear the woman yelling. He found her on the second floor and carried her outside to safety.
The Sauk Centre Fire Department arrived and put the fire out. The three residents of the house were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not released. The officer was treated at the scene and returned to duty.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
