(KNSI) – As the University of Minnesota Medical School moves closer to opening a St. Cloud area location, it is moving up the ranks regarding federal government funds.

The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research tracks med schools by how much in awards they receive from the National Institutes of Health. Minnesota came in at number 21 overall last year and was the eighth-highest public medical school on the list.

In the Midwest, the University of Minnesota trailed Northwestern and the University of Michigan but was well ahead of Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin. Minnesota got over $340 million from the NIH in 2022.

Dean Jakub Tolar says, “The value of the ranking is that first, it acknowledges the incredible work of our faculty and staff, in partnership with the State of Minnesota, to advance health and health care in areas of greatest need, like cancer, aging, and infectious disease.”

The medical school hopes to open a site locally by 2025. It would team with CentraCare to specialize in training doctors to practice in smaller cities and rural communities.
