(KNSI) – Sherburne County presented its Life Saving Award to the youngest person to receive one.
The sheriff’s office honored 4-year-old Asher Milless for his heroic actions in helping save his mother’s life during a medical emergency.
On November 20th, Rachel Milless was at her Orrock Township home when she suddenly collapsed in her kitchen. Her husband was traveling out of the state for work when he got a call from his mother, who said Asher called her to say Rachel was on the kitchen floor, blinking her eyes but unable to speak.
Asher’s dad called 911 and told him to unlock the front door of their home so paramedics could get in. That wasn’t all Asher would do to help save his mom’s life that day. He also hooked up Rachel’s nebulizer and got it working. The little hero also ushered his two siblings – a 2-year-old and a 10-month-old – out of the kitchen so they wouldn’t see their mother in distress. This also cleared room for paramedics to work.
First responders arrived and stabilized Rachel, and took her to the hospital. When paramedics arrived, she was in septic shock. She had been ill with pneumonia and influenza A, which had gotten so bad that her organs were starting to shut down. Doctors told the family that if Asher hadn’t done what he did, Rachel likely wouldn’t be alive today. Rachel recovered and was at Tuesday’s ceremony with her husband, his mother and Asher.
