(KNSI) – Catholic Community Schools are showing off the newly remodeled Cathedral Middle School.

This is the first year the 6th-8th grade building has been in operation. Administrators let the media and school supporters get a look at the new space on Friday afternoon. CMS uses project-based learning to teach its students. Eighth-grade science teacher Shirley Janu explained to KNSI how the method works. “The idea is, the more hands-on application that they receive, the better that they can learn from it. They can see through trial and error, what works, what doesn’t work and how can we change things and manipulate it to create a different situation?”

Cathedral Marketing Director Christina Oliver says this is the first year with the new teaching method. “They had a look at the curriculum and said, we need to make some changes. We need a lot more hands on experiences. And you see all the classrooms, there’s no singular way in which you sit. You sit in teams and you sit in groups. So there’s a lot of project work.”

Administrators say the learning style combines the best of traditional teaching practices with new technology and critical thinking. Project-based learning is also about helping students understand how to apply what they’ve learned to real-world situations. The remodeled school features new sciences rooms, a culinary arts kitchen and a craft space to apply the concepts kids are learning.
