(KNSI) – Unhealthy air will stick around central Minnesota longer than initially thought.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has extended an air quality alert until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday for much of the state, including the St. cloud area. The Air Quality Index is expected to be in the Red (Unhealthy for All) in the Twin Cities and Moorhead areas. Orange AQI is expected across the rest of the alert area.

MPCA

Orange AQI means fine particles will reach an unhealthy level for sensitive groups such as people with heart, lung, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.

According to the MPCA, light winds combined with moisture from melting snow have trapped fine particulate pollution near the surface. Conditions will begin to improve Wednesday evening.

The alert went into effect Monday morning and was supposed to expire at noon on Tuesday.
