(KNSI) – Banfield Pet Hospital could soon get the okay for its own standalone facility in Waite Park.

The issue will come before the city council on Wednesday, January 18th. The veterinary clinic is currently located inside PetsMart. The business wants to open in the Marketplace Shopping Center at 110 2nd Street South.

The new site is zoned B-2 for commercial and general business, which requires a conditional use permit for an animal hospital. The plan was recommended by the city’s planning commission after a meeting on December 27th. Similar businesses already operate in the area without a CUP, but they were grandfathered in before ordinance requirements changed.

It has not been decided if the PetsMart location would remain open. Exterior signage for the Marketplace site would have to be approved through a permit in the future. A possible kennel run for dogs is not included in the upcoming hearing and would need to go before the city council at a later date.

The issue was originally scheduled to be heard on January 3rd but a snowstorm caused the meeting to be canceled.
