Winter Storm Warning, Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Tuesday and Wednesday

(KNSI) — The system expected to impact a large swath of Minnesota slowed down overnight, so the forecast has again changed.

The winter storm warning is now in effect from 7:00 Tuesday morning until 6:00 Tuesday night. That’s when a winter weather advisory kicks in and continues until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Heavy snow will move into southwest Minnesota on Tuesday morning and spread across central Minnesota and western Wisconsin into early Tuesday afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center says once the snow does begin to fall, it will fall at rates of one to two inches an hour. Some lightning strikes are also possible within the heavier bands of snow.

For the winter storm warning, a wintry mix will become heavy snow, with total accumulations of four to seven inches expected. There will be higher snow totals in west central and southwest Minnesota.

As the bulk of the system moves out, the winter weather advisory goes into effect, with steady snow developing Tuesday night and persisting into Wednesday. Most areas will see an additional two to five inches during that period.

There will be a sharp cutoff with this system as areas just north of St. Cloud won’t see nearly as much snow.
