(KNSI) — Minnesota-based 3M is looking for its next young scientist.

The 3M Young Scientist Challenge is aimed at kids in grades 5-8. Students must submit a video no longer than one or two minutes explaining an original idea using science to solve an everyday problem. Last year’s winner was Leanne Fan of San Diego. She created Finsen Headphones. The headphones are antibiotic-free and low-cost, using blue light therapy to detect and treat middle ear infections. A press release says the use of the headphones could reduce the number of children who suffer from hearing loss by up to 60%.

Previous challenge finalists have collaborated with 3M scientists to create solutions to various real-world problems, including COVID-19, water conservation, food waste, alternative energy sources, cancer treatments, energy consumption, and transportation efficiency.

The Young Scientist Challenge will recognize one grand prize winner, ten finalists, the Improving Lives Award, four honorable mentions and up to 50 state merit winners. The grand prize winner will get an exclusive mentorship with a 3M scientist, a $25,000 grand prize, and the chance to earn the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”

Applications will be accepted until April 27th. Winners will be announced in June 2023.
