(KNSI) – Minnesota is investing $100 million into extending broadband internet access across rural parts of the state. Officials say it is the most significant single investment in broadband infrastructure in Minnesota’s History.
Governor Walz says the money will connect more than 33,000 homes in 48 counties. The funds will go to 61 expansion projects.
In the St. Cloud area, around $8.3 million will be spent. Benton Cooperative Telephone Company will get $1,512,951, Tekstar Communications, Inc. dba Arvig, will receive $1,075,943, Albany Mutual Telephone will see $746,964, and Melrose Telephone Co. dba Arvig will get $4,974,570.
“This historic funding will dramatically improve broadband access for thousands of Minnesotans,” said Governor Walz. “Broadband connects students to new educational opportunities, provides workers with more flexibility, expands access to healthcare resources and information, and helps us stay connected to the people who matter most. This investment is essential to making Minnesota the best state to live, work, and raise a family – no matter where you live.”
The grants are funded through the Border-to-Border Broadband program. The Department of Employment and Economic Development’s Office of Broadband Development administers the program.
