(KNSI) — With everyone pinching pennies and inflation still at over 7%, some people may be second guessing those annual holiday tips.

Etiquette expert Dianne Grottsman says it’s OK not to give as much money as you normally do because “it’s really important to first and foremost respect your own budget. You don’t have to make excuses, and say ‘gosh. Times are tough so this is less.’ Just give with a gracious smile.”

She said to remember, “a tip is a gift and not an obligation.”

There are ways to give a little extra without digging deep into your pocketbook, such as a lovely coffee mug, a Christmas ornament, or a box of chocolates.

If you’re the crafty type, Grottsman advises avoiding giving baked goods and homemade treats and instead focusing on handmade crafts and a heartfelt note.
