(KNSI) – Today’s focus for Winter Hazard Awareness Week is fire safety.

Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck says his department has to deal with chimney issues every year. He says everyone should check to ensure there is not a potentially flammable buildup of creosote and other materials. Heck says some homes are more susceptible than others.

“You’re going to want to make sure that you are keeping up on that maintenance. If you burn wood for heat, make sure that that chimney is clear.”

Chimneys should be examined yearly. A level one inspection looks at the easily accessible parts of the chimney and fireplace. A level two inspection uses a video camera to look at harder to reach places, such as the flue.

When wind chills dip to around 50-below, many will turn to a space heater on top of the furnace or fireplace for the drafty locations in the house. Heck talks about some of the dangers of using an alternative heating source.

“Those heating devices that burn fuel, that’s going to be a carbon monoxide concern so you’re gonna want to ensure you have adequate ventilation. Be careful that any electric heaters you use are in good shape. You’re not going to want to have frayed wires.”

Carbon monoxide detectors should be checked at least twice a year to ensure they are working properly. It is known as the silent killer because it is an odorless gas that is difficult to discern without some sort of electronic sensor.
