(KNSI) – The Saint Cloud Fire Department wants families to have a way to get out of their homes safely in the event of a fire.
Fire Won’t Wait, Plan Your Escape is the theme for the 100th anniversary of National Fire Prevention Week. SCFD Assistant Fire Marshal Greg Adamietz says to devise a plan and practice it.
“Draw a simple house plan with each room’s windows and doors. Show how to get out of the room. And know how to get out in two different ways. Either by a window or by two different doors and practice it for each of the rooms.”
Fire Chief Matt Love says it’s essential to have a plan after your family is out of the house.
“When you get out of the house, there’s a really critical component to this, which is having a family meeting place. The first thing we’re asking is where is everybody? Are they out? Are they not? So we really want families to know that they’re all out. And the way to achieve that is through this family meeting place concept.”
The chief says a meeting place can be by a favorite tree in the front yard or a mailbox. The fire department is visiting St. Cloud elementary schools this week to help students’ families create an escape plan.
