(KNSI) — A Waite Park man is in jail after a possible assault led to a search warrant and standoff in a situation that played out over nearly 24 hours beginning early Friday.
According to a press release, just after 2:15 a.m. Friday morning, a man called Waite Park Police and said he had been on a walk in the 200 block of 10th Avenue North when he was threatened by a man who pointed a gun at him from his front door. Officers responded but were unable to make contact with anyone. They returned around 10:25 p.m. and knocked on the door, but no one answered. A few minutes later, a man partially exited the house, and police said they noticed he had a gun before he went back inside. They went to the door again, but he refused to talk to the police. The officers began negotiating with the man but said he was uncooperative. The St. Cloud SWAT team was called in to assist. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Department and St. Joseph Police Department also arrived to help out. A perimeter was set up, and several surrounding homes were evacuated as a precaution.
After about four hours, a search warrant was obtained, and police entered the house. The man was arrested and booked into the Stearns County jail, awaiting formal charges. KNSI does not typically name suspects until they have been formally charged.
